This is without doubt the “CLASSIC” Mamod TE, this was the model I owned as a child
and has a special place in my heart. This model is very common, although it actually
took me two years to find this perfect unused - boxed example.
The 1972's onwards have the now familiar spring lever type whistle, which was less
likely to burn your fingers. The reversing lever was bent through ninety degrees,
and from now on all the smoke boxes had TE1A listed on them. The canopy transfer
was replaced by a lovely lithographed piece of sign writing, and the canopy changed
with the introduction of a screw to hold it onto the chimney rather than the older
style clip fitting.
This was Mamod’s “Golden Period” and in 1974, the company produced 52,500 Traction
Engines
